Shona Dictionary Quick Start


You have two lists to look up words from, a Shona word list (default), and an English word list. The Shona word list can be accessed by clicking on the Shona radio selection, likewise the English word list can be accessed by clicking on the on the English radio selection.

  2. Note:

    * VaShona uses the grave accent, ` instead of single quotation mark, ' in spelling.
    For example, the VaShona entry is N`anga instead of N'anga.

  3. Translation:

    To translate sentences and conjugated words/phrases use the Shona Translator.

  4. Word Roots:

    This Shona Language Dictionary has Shona word roots only. This means words in the dictionary are not conjugated with respect to modifiers. For example the English word my's root in Shona is angu; angu is conjugated by a set of determiner modifiers {ch, ..., zv}. So my in Shona can be {changu, ..., zvangu}, depending on the class of the noun. The same can be applied to transformed verbs.
